Replacing an air conditioner is not the same job as installing one, and it is not priced the same way either. A replacement is two jobs, not one
Every replacement is a dismantling plus an installation. What dismantling includes
Taking down a split system properly is more than lifting it off the wall. The refrigerant has to be recovered into the outdoor unit first — a pump-down — so it is not released into the air. Venting refrigerant is both an environmental problem and a waste of the gas that a working unit still holds. After that, the electrical connection is isolated, the pipes are disconnected and capped, and the indoor and outdoor units come off their brackets.
What is left behind matters too: the wall opening, the old bracket, and the condensate route. A tidy dismantling leaves those in a state the new installation can reuse. A rushed one leaves you paying to patch and redrill.
What can be reused — and what usually should not
The wall opening is the easiest carry-over. If the new indoor unit sits in roughly the same place, the existing core hole normally works, which saves drilling a masonry or reinforced wall.
The outdoor bracket is often reusable if it is not corroded and is rated for the new unit's weight. Heavier new units on old thin brackets are a genuine safety issue, not a cosmetic one.
The copper piping is the judgement call. Reusing it is possible when the diameters match the new unit, the runs are undamaged, and the lines are properly flushed — but older systems ran on R22 or R410A, and residual oil from those is not compatible with the R32 units sold today. Contamination shows up later as a failed compressor, which is why many installers price new piping by default. Ask which approach the quote assumes; it is one of the largest single differences between two replacement prices.
The old unit itself should leave with the installer for proper disposal rather than sitting on your balcony.
Repair or replace?
Age and fault type decide this. A unit under roughly eight years old with a fixable fault — a fan motor, a sensor, a controller board, a leak that can be sealed and recharged — is usually worth repairing. Beyond that, three things push toward replacement: a failing compressor, which is the most expensive component in the system; an obsolete refrigerant that is hard or costly to source; and efficiency, since a decade-old fixed-speed unit uses substantially more electricity than a current inverter for the same comfort. If the unit is old and the repair is major, the repair money is usually better spent as a down payment on the inverter unit you would have bought anyway.
One thing worth checking before you decide: an AC that cools poorly is not always failing. A clogged filter or an unserviced coil produces the same symptoms, and a service costs a fraction of a replacement.
Budgeting the total
A realistic replacement budget has four lines: the new unit, the installation tier for its size class, the dismantling extra, and any piping or access work the job needs.
